Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions about colored window tint, our films, install, warranty, or shipping? Most answers are below. If you don’t see what you need, scroll to the bottom or email us at warranty@noctistint.com and we’ll respond within 1 business day.
Legality & Compliance
Is colored window tint legal in my state?
It depends on your state, the windows you’re tinting, the darkness (VLT %), and the color. Most states regulate front side window darkness and restrict certain colors (red, amber, blue) on regulated windows. Mirror and reflective films also face restrictions.
Read our complete state-by-state colored window tint legality guide for the full breakdown. Always verify with your state DMV before installation.
Will I get pulled over for colored tint?
If your tint complies with your state’s VLT and color restrictions, no. If it doesn’t, illegal tint is a primary offense in most states (you can be pulled over just for it). Penalties typically range from $50-$250 for a first offense plus a fix-it ticket requiring removal.
Can I run colored tint on rear windows only?
Yes — in most states, rear side windows and the rear windshield have looser legal restrictions than front sides. This is the most popular way to run bold colored films legally on a daily-driven vehicle.
Choosing a Color
How do I pick the right colored tint for my car?
The two biggest factors are your paint color and your intended look. Cool paints (blue, green, purple) pair with cool tints; warm paints (red, orange, gold) pair with warm tints. Black and silver paint work with almost anything.
Read our complete color selection guide for paint-pairing recommendations on all 13 of our films.
What’s the difference between solid and colorshift tint?
Solid colored films stay one consistent color from every angle. Colorshift films use dichroic technology to flex multiple colors as light and viewing angle change. Solid films are typically darker, more privacy-focused, and cheaper. Colorshift films are lighter, more dramatic, and more expensive.
Compare them in detail in our colorshift vs solid tint guide.
What’s the difference between ceramic and non-ceramic tint?
Ceramic films use nano-ceramic particles for the highest heat rejection (up to 90%), best UV protection (99%), longest lifespan (10+ years), and zero signal interference. Non-ceramic films cost less but offer lower heat rejection and shorter lifespan.
Read the full ceramic vs non-ceramic comparison. Our ceramic options are Cubic, Rainbow Trout, and Expensive Purps.
Will the color in person match the photos?
Photos are representative, but tint can look noticeably different in person depending on your monitor calibration, lighting, and the underlying glass and paint of your vehicle. We work hard to capture accurate product photography, but always treat photos as a guide rather than a perfect preview.
Installation
Can I install Noctis Tint myself?
Yes — our films are sold in pre-cut DIY kit sizes designed for self-install. That said, window tint installation requires skill and patience. If you’ve never installed tint before, we recommend either hiring a professional installer or watching multiple tutorial videos and starting on a less critical window.
What tools do I need to install tint?
Standard tint install tools include: spray bottle with soap-and-water solution, squeegee, hard card, sharp craft knife, lint-free microfiber towels, heat gun (for shrinking film on curved glass), and a clean dust-free workspace.
How long does installation take?
For an experienced installer, a full vehicle takes 2-4 hours. For first-timers, expect 4-8 hours, especially if you’re working on curved rear glass that requires heat shrinking.
Do you offer installation services?
We sell DIY kits only. We don’t offer in-house installation, but we’re happy to recommend professional installers in your area — email warranty@noctistint.com with your zip code.
Warranty
What does the $5 Lifetime Warranty cover?
The optional Lifetime Warranty Protection add-on covers manufacturer defects including bubbling, peeling, delamination, color shift, demetallization, and adhesive failure for as long as you own your vehicle.
It does NOT cover damage from accidents, improper cleaning, third-party installation errors, or normal wear and tear. Read the full Lifetime Warranty Policy for complete terms.
How do I file a warranty claim?
Visit our Warranty Claim Portal. You’ll need your original receipt, photos of the defect, vehicle info, and installation date. Claims are reviewed within 15 business days.
Can I add the warranty after I order?
The Lifetime Warranty Protection must be purchased on the same order as the film it covers. We cannot add warranty coverage to a previous order retroactively.
Is the warranty transferable if I sell my car?
No. The warranty applies only to the original purchaser and does not transfer to subsequent vehicle owners.
Care & Maintenance
How do I clean tinted windows?
Use only ammonia-free cleaners (look for cleaners labeled "safe for tinted windows") or a simple solution of distilled water with a few drops of dish soap. Apply with a soft microfiber towel — never paper towels or rough cloths.
Wait at least 7 days after installation before cleaning to allow adhesive to fully cure.
How long does colored window tint last?
Lifespan varies by film type:
- Dyed films: 3-5 years
- Metalized/mirror films: 5-7 years
- Carbon and non-ceramic colored films: 7-10 years
- Ceramic films: 10+ years
Climate, sun exposure, and care habits all affect actual lifespan. Read our complete tint durability and care guide for tips to maximize lifespan.
What causes tint to turn purple?
"Purpling" happens to dyed films as the dye breaks down from UV exposure. Once you see this, the film is past its useful life and should be replaced. Ceramic and carbon films don’t purple.
